Re: John's Weekly Reading and Ratings

Post by bralinator »

Just finished episode #366 and really enjoyed the reviews. Thanks for cranking out so many episodes recently John! Regarding Drew's conspiracy theory about the Inhumans becoming the new mutant franchise (or NuHuman franchise) for Marvel studios, his presumptions are possibly a lot closer than you think John. It is obvious that Marvel has been prioritizing The Inhumans as a major property in Marvel comics, with an eye toward creating a new movie franchise.

Many have speculated that this is an intentional act to create an alternative to the mutant population of the X-Men comic books. Marvel cannot make films or TV shows of the X-Men properties, as the rights were bought by Fox during Marvel’s term in bankruptcy, as were the rights to the Fantastic Four, but they can still make films starring The Inhumans, Or at least, they can now…

But in the year 2000, they couldn’t. Dave Elliott and ex-Marvel movie mogul Avi Arad tried selling an Inhumans movie to Paramount, based on the Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee Eisner Marvel Knights series. But when Paramount didn’t like that, Elliott pitched the Neal Adams/Jack Kirby plot about Black Bolt coming to New York, as the backbone of the film. According to sources, Mike Mignola was going to do some of the redesigns, there was an animated spinoff planned, the film was financed, director attached and contracts signed. Elliott told folks to check their license contracts but Avi Arad told him they didn’t need to.

Paramount wanted to buy it, but when Marvel eventually did check their contracts, they found that Fox had the rights to use the Inhumans in films since their first appearance was in The Fantastic Four. Marvel then offered the project to Fox, as it was fully funded, but Fox said no. (Read more here: http://www.kdramastars.com/articles/341 ... -super.htm)

And just as there proved some wiggle room with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, so Marvel Studios believe they have similar wiggle room now. It may need a namechange to Nuhmans, and they may need to use all the new characters they have been creating recently across the world, rather than Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon, Lockjaw and others from the original appearances.

So, Drew may be onto something that's actually happening, and John's belief that the Inhumans are a problem for Marvel's movie aspirations. I think you are BOTH right and it is one of the few ideas that make sense of everything we're seeing. Drew may in fact be correct that (sales numbers be damned) the Inhumans title will last as long as it needs to in order to take off.

So Fox isn't licensing the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four but owns them flat out? That seems really odd but with the bankruptcy, it does seem possible. Can you point me in the direction of something that covers that in more detail? It certainly gives a lot of support to Drew's conspiracy theory.

I cannot speak to the veracity of this article but it appears the author (and a few people in the talkback thread that follows) has done some top-notch research on the subject here: http://www.comicvine.com/marvel/4010-31 ... -a-666672/.

It would appear that as long as FOX keeps making movies with the FF and the X-Men, they get to keep those properties.

No, I haven't continued with it past the first issue. I take it you think it is worth it for me to chase down copies?

John, I think it's awesome and seriously just a fun comic book. I'm a huge fan of the movie. I love the dialogue for Jack in the book. I do think it's worth reading beyond number one.

Even though you have a large pull list, so I can understand if you need to keep it at a certain number.

Right now for fun comic books, I go to Big Trouble in Little China and Usagi Yojimbo as my go-to books. Also, TMNT if i can dig them out.

I'll see if I can chase down the other issues of Big Trouble in Little China.
