Re: John's Weekly Reading and Ratings

Post by TJ602 »

John,

I really like the new review grading system. I know you probably don't want to hear this but I feel with you being all in with DC and marvel, and not dropping books from the big 2, you give so many mediocre to terrible marvel and dc books 3/5's. The new grading system has you giving way more C- and D's than I remember you giving in the past. This to me is awesome. With so many amazing comic being published by Image/Dark Horse/Boom...and all the other indies, its seems like such a waste to me to continue buying such mediocre big 2 product. I like seeing the greater diversity in the grading as not all these comics can be "average". It also has helped you guys differentiate the top comics better. Really teasing out what separates A from A-.

Please don't take this as an attack on your buying habits. If I had $500-$600 to spend each month on comics I would be much more willing to tolerate mediocrity. (as you probably see it, letting a book develop to see if it gets better as it progresses or wait for new creators or a relaunch).

I have a $100 a month comic budget with occasional splurges for big items, so I am much more like Drew in that I cut titles all the time if they don't entertain me anymore. Obviously there are differences in taste but I find so much of the big 2 output (more DC than marvel right now) mediocre. I feel the only way to send a message to the companies that their product could be so much better is choosing very carefully where I spend my money. Thus, I buy almost exclusively non-big 2 (except for the odd vertigo title). This is why sometimes I cringe when you describe on the podcast a title as a average comic. I would drop an "average" comic so fast it not even funny. There are so many indies I want to try out, who has time for average (Yes I know I sound a little unhinged as "average" is different for everyone). Before this system change I felt you gave so many 3/5 I was like whats the point in reading so many average books, but obviously we are very different comics consumers and theres nothing wrong with that.

I guess I just wanted to give a big thumbs up to the grading change :) and say that isn't it great that we live in a time when comics has so much variety that both of us can be happy fans even if you have no interest in the horror comics I like (and spotlight in the previews podcast with a disclaimer "not for John") and I can't understand why you, or anyone else for that matter would keep buying DC's terrible "Klarion"

Your podcast was one of the main reasons I got back into reading comics after a 10 yr hiatus. Thank you for improving the show and having such a passion for comics.

Re: John's Weekly Reading and Ratings

Post by JohnMayo »

I'm glad the podcast helped get you back into reading comics and I'm glad you like new rating system. I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

When I started the Weekly Comics Spotlight the initial rating system was a simple good/neutral/bad system and that simply wasn't enough granularity. Moving to the 5 point scale helped a lot. IAt that time, I was against getting to granular with the ratings as it seemed a bit abitrary to get so specific on a rating. But, after doing this for many years, I found I really did need a more detailed system. In particular, the granularity at the top was missing since I was reserving the 5 out of 5 for near perfect books. Shifting that to an A+ gives me more room at the top for damn good but not perfect comics to get a B+, A- or A and still have that top most rating for the truly exceptional comics. In my mind, an A+ comic is clearly identifiable as such and even if I can't articulate why something doesn't get the A+, I still have the A rating to give such a comic. For me, that is a huge improvement in the system.

I do think we use two terms a little bit differently. You seem to equate "average" with "mediocre" while I don't. For me, as someone that is reading around four dozen new comics a week, an "average" comic is just that, it is of the quality of the majority of the comics I'm reading. By definition, the majority of the comics I'm reading are of average quality. There is a selection bias since I do drop things that aren't for me. As a result, that bottom part of the scale shouldn't get used too often.

I also try to differentiate what I think is a good comic and what I personally like and enjoy. As you correctly point out, I'm not into horror and the better a horror book is, the less I'm likely to enjoy it. My lack of enjoyment of a comics doesn't automatically make something a bad comic. It might be a perfectly great comic but just not for me. That having been said, I can tell when a comic is just poorly done. Some comics have flawed concepts, ineffective storytelling, bad art or as just not so great from a more objective point of view. In those cases, I try to give constructive criticism and I feel that can be much to learn from any comic that isn't of that A+ quality.

Figuring out why a comic isn't perfect (or just really damn good) can be a great learning experience. For me, at least. I'm sure most comic book readers aren't going after that experience and nor should they. Most readers, and I think you are in this group, just want to be entertained by the comics they read and therefore should only get the items they feel are the comics they find the most entertaining. I don't think there is anything about me from the size of my reading list, to the number crunching I do on the sales trends to the hundreds and hundreds of hours/episodes of podcasting I've done that puts me in that mythical "typical comic book reader" category. And I'm okay with that.

Sometimes I'm just not the target audience. For example, I don't think I'm part of the intended target audience for Klarion. At least I really hope I'm not part of the intended target audience. The book just isn't connecting with me. But I don't think it is a lack of quality in the book so much as a major lack of interest on my part. This was part of why I added the "(or one you lose interest tin reading before the end of the issue)" to the D rating. Even if a title is damn good from a more technical point of view, if I'm bored with it or really struggle to get through the issue for whatever reason, I can't really give it a good rating. To me, ratings are a combination of quality and my enjoyment of the material.

So why do I keep getting things like Klarion? I've gotten every New 52 comic DC has done so far and I preorder my comics through DCBS. While I could email DCBS and drop the title, that isn't particularly fair to DCBS which preordered the issues for me. And, having a complete collection of the current DC New 52 continuity, there is a completest mentality that factors in as well. I can afford to get the title and I was certain DC would quickly cancel it so I'm only out around $10 or $20 which isn't a big deal. By staying all in, either on a title through the valleys of lacklusterness, or a universe, I have a greater context for enjoying the high points and a better vantage point to judge other comics both in terms of quality and in terms of sales.

I really enjoy reading comics, even the not so brilliant ones. I like having a big stack of comics every week even and that involves getting more than just the best of the best titles out there.

I don't have to remove something from my pull list to make room for a new title. I can just add the new title. Not everybody can do that or wants to do that.

Like I said, I'm glad the new rating system is working out for you. I think the improved granularity is really helpful, particularly at the top of the scale.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. You are exactly right about a comic being able to be technically proficient while still getting a C- or lower as it is just not working for you (i.e. enjoying it). I think your point that being all in allows you to really see the entire shared universe is totally valid. I can see how it would be rewarding to have followed all of the stories for so long and see the easter eggs creator slip in or the overarching story payoffs. I can especially imagine this with a creator like Grant Morrison, where multiversity rewards those fans who have been reading all of DC for a long time :D

I will continue to look forward to those C- and D's reviews as well as A and A-'s. If we all agreed what a "great" comic was, what a boring world we would live in.

Wikipedia also helps a lot with Grant Morrison's more recent work.
