DC: Convergence

Post by JohnMayo »

From Comic Book Resources:
Following weeks of speculation, DC Comics officially announced this morning that its entire superhero line will be placed on hold in April and May, making way for the sprawling nine-week event series "Convergence."

The timing coincides with the final phase of the company's move from New York City to Burbank, California.

USA Today reports that "Convergence" will launch April 1 with a zero issue that spins out of the finales of "Earth 2: World's End" and "The New 52: Futures End," leading to an eight-part main series and 40 two-part miniseries that examine the worlds from the past eight decades of the DC Universe, and the heroes and villains they contain.

According to Co-Publisher Jim Lee, the event will tackle the most-asked questions since DC rebooted its superhero line in 2011 with the New 52: whether key stories in DC history still "count" in continuity, and what happened to some of the beloved characters that haven't been reintroduced in the past three years.

"What we're really addressing is they all exist and have existed and exist within the framework of the New 52," Lee told the newspaper. "'Convergence' is in many ways the most meta epic event we've done."

The miniseries will also introduce a new villain, Tellos, who is "born of Brainiac and this mysterious planet."

Although "Convergence" will involve an array of creators, who will be announced in the coming weeks, the main plot line handled by veteran television writer Jeff King ("White Collar," "Continuum"), making his comic book debut. Dan Jurgens will co-write the zero issue with him, while Scott Lobdell will help to lay out the overall outline.
I'm not sure interrupting the New 52 for two months is a great idea. A nine part miniseries and 40 two-part miniseries reminds me of the Flashpoint event. But, since this covers the timeframe of DC finishing its move from New York to Burbank, this might be a good plan. It is an interesting way to give all of those people time to move without having to keep monthly titles going.

What I find interesting / have questions about is if this will effect the usually scheduled September event. If DC still chooses to do a September event that means three full months will be missing from the normal monthly books in 2015. I'm not sure only putting out 9 books a year for an ongoing title is a great idea, and will have to negatively effect story flow unless they go to more single issue stories (something I'm not against).

I would be surprised if they don't do a September stunt given how successful they have been.

I agree that doing one so soon after this Convergence event would be interrupt the ongoing titles yet again and that seems like a really bad idea.

I like the idea of more single issue stories. Focusing on the payoff per issue is always a good idea and doesn't mean there can't be some story elements that span issues. Single issue stories don't have to be literally done-in-one stories. Shifting away from chapters of a larger story that are incomplete on their own to self standing stories which can build to a larger whole is something I've been in favor of for years.

i hope the books are at a stopping point this time and not mid-arc like every other time they do this stuff (looking at you September Event)

Hopefully things will be at a nice stopping point. If they are, that might make the September event a bit tricky with only three months between Convergence and September. Maybe we'll get a bunch of three part stories but I kind of doubt it.

I'm a little disappointed that all the convergence one shots are 3.99. As a New 52 reader I'm not familiar with the former DC timelines and this doesn't appear to be a great moment to sample. Maybe if the price was DC's mainstay of 2.99 then I might read a few. As of now I'm on a 2 month DC hiatus.

i plan on reading a bunch of them, think it will be a interesting couple of months...the 3.99 price point sucks

hopefully the issue twos aren't 4.99 like some recent annuals...

I expect the second issues will be the same price as the first ones. The higher price point is unfortunate and the issues don't seem to be any longer. Hopefully this isn't a sign that DC might be looking to start raising prices after years of holding the line at $2.99.

DC has done a pretty good of keeping books at $2.99, however they seemingly have reaped little reward in terms of sales or even good will for doing so. As virtually every other publisher as gone to $3.99 as their base price (Dark Horse seemingly has gone back to $3.50 of late). The old cliche "Money talks" could not be truer. At 4+ years into this $2.99 vs. $3.99 debate market share remains virtually unchanged. Comic book buyers dollars have spoken very loudly and very clearly, "We will not reward a publisher for cheaper books, nor will we punish a publisher for higher priced books". DC has left $1.00 (depending on distribution cost $0.35-$0.50) per issue on the table for no gain. The fact that they have held onto this prices so long is a miracle, because at the end of the day seemingly no one cares. The consumer has shouted that at the top of their lungs with their buying habits that they simply don't care.

In recent years DC has priced their event spin-offs at $3.99, look at Future's End and Villains Month. I wonder if DC is using the $3.99 price point for Convergence titles in order to make up revenue. DC's best selling titles Batman and Harley Quinn are taking a two month hiatus. I am not trying to be negative but the creative teams for the various Batman Convergence titles do not have the same 'heat' as Snyder and Capullo.

I was slipping away from new DC books for awhile, but the Convergence solicits hooked me and brought me back. I'm pretty excited about this event, for the most part.

Single issue stories don't have to be literally done-in-one stories. Shifting away from chapters of a larger story that are incomplete on their own to self standing stories which can build to a larger whole is something I've been in favor of for years.
Amen. One of the reasons my interest was slipping from DC for awhile is that they have so many story arcs which start and conclude at about the same time, and are each 5-6 issues long. The Justice League had an adventure going on in their book, and were also appearing in Batman, Batman and Robin, and no doubt other books...plus there was Injustice: Gods Among Us, Fight for the Multiverse, etc., etc. Batman and Superman appear in so many titles at once, it was getting confusing...and still is. I am mitigating this somewhat by reading more titles as whole arcs before moving to the other...so one adventure can pretty much end before the other begins. But this is a pain.

I agree with you, John, that a different approach works better. A recent example is Batgirl (which, by the way, you and Drew brought me to. I wasn't going to try it, but I'm glad I did!) I get a satisfying reading experience just reading a single issue of that title, yet I can't wait to see what happens next.

That is how I think comics should be written. Each issue is worth reading in and of itself and keeps the reader interested enough to want to get the next issue.

I agree but it happens less and less...there reLly is no incentive for a creator like Scott Snyder to write 6 self contained stories / new ideas when he can just take one and expand it a bit to six chapters instead...obviously batman hasn't sold any less and it's pretty good it just goes on a bit too long and doesn't always stick the landing...which makes new batgirl or warren Ellis run on moon knight stand out
