Agreed. I really do 't see how they can charge that much and not lose some of their customers, even with extra pages.

I would be more inclined to buy more at $2.99 if they trimmed the page count back. Doubtful they'll go that route though.

Gotta start waiting for trades more often...

its really making me re-think purchasing single issues - i was grumbling about 3.99 being a ripoff, i am definitely scaling back a bit, hell i can get an entire image trade for 4.99 through mailorder

Sad to see yet Marvel maintains their market share. I don't understand how Marvel continues to charge their prices for books that are not top knotch. Amazing Spider-man with Slott writing-yes, but Squirrel Girl? At least DC and Image have plenty under the 3.99/4.99 price tag.

This is just one reason why I am trying to stick with doing all my Marvel reading on Marvel Unlimited. I say "try" because it is always tempting to buy what's current! I would rather read my favorite titles as they come out...I feel like I am missing out on some cool conversations if I don't (MU also serves as great marketing for current Marvel issues!) but as someone who can barely maintain this awesome hobby as it is, I like to think I am still doing what I can to stay active by reading with MU. And I don't have to deal with $4.99 or $5.99 titles.

I've begun actively avoiding titles and waiting on the trades. I don't mind not being in on the conversations in order to save money. If I have to wait until 5 issues of an arc print, and they are $5 each ($2.50 on DCBS), and I can get the trade for 9.99 on DCBS (or InStockTrades), and maybe even cheaper on eBay, then it may be worth it to save that cash. The fewer books that initially sell will probably cause the companies to raise the prices even higher to cover their margins.

I think "disturbing" is very applicable in this scenario over all.

I get that some of you guys are floppy comic diehards who cant give up your paper comics, but this is only going to get worse. I went Marvel unlimited ($79 a year....~$7 a month) because I just could not deal with marvel pricing everything at $3.99 and double shipping. 20 pages of story for so much is absurd, especially with the story decompression we see in modern comics. Every time I see these solicits I laugh and remind myself that marvel has taken the $30-50 a month they used to get from me and turned it into $7.....way to think long term marvel 8)..... Yes, I have to wait a few months to read the most recent stuff, but I read all of marvel that I enjoy for the cost of 2 of there comics.....Good luck to the fools that pay $3.99 for a weekly book

That's interesting. So to those with Marvel Unlimited accounts, how do you read books from DC, IDW, Image, Boom!, Dynamite, Omi Press, etc? Comixology?

How do you like the MU app? Is it perfect or slightly frustrating in any way? Setting aside the money savings, what would you do to correct any issues with the digital delivery systems?

Re: Disturbing number of 4.99 books from Marvel in May

Marvel Unlimited now puts all of Marvel's main comics on its service almost exactly six months after each issue was originally released. For instance, this past week, New Avengers #23 (August 20, 2014),Original Sins #5 (Aug. 20, 2014), Magneto #8 (Aug. 20, 2014) and the rest of the Aug. 20 releases were released on MU.

MU releases titles on a weekly basis. Instead of Wednesday, the latest round comes out on Mondays, so tomorrow (as I write this), they will release the Aug. 27 books.

This comprehensive release schedule was a huge improvement because in the first few years of the service, there were several gaps in many of the runs. Since then, Marvel has been filling in those gaps consistently, though there is still work to do. The back catalog is still not fully populated yet, and I assume it will be years before it is. However, from the start of Marvel Now (in 2012?) on forward, they've succeeded (as far as I can tell) at including every "main" (for lack of a better term) Marvel release.

I say "main" because there are some titles they don't put on the service, such as the Max titles, and most of their licensed property titles. For instance, there are no "Star Wars" titles, but they do have "John Carter of Mars" titles.

Another thing I really like about MU is everything is sorted by original release date. As I add my titles to my Must Read list, the list automatically sorts the titles based on when they were released, which makes reading in chronological story order easier (that is, provided they were originally released in proper chronological order in the first place, but as we know, that's another story. :) )

I think the MU app is generally good, though sometimes it can be buggy. For instance, there are some occasions when a title won't load when I try to open it. During those times, if I download it first, then I can open it. You are allowed 12 downloaded titles at a time for offline viewing. (IMO, they should allow more.)

I don't like how the service crops panels for "Smart Panel" viewing. Sometimes, they cut off word balloons, and the resolution on some of the panels, when zoomed in, can be quite poor. So, as I said in another thread, I decided to start reading comics full-page and got a Galaxy Note 12.2 inch tablet which presents the comic book page at pretty much the same size as print. I believe Drew has done the same thing. I really like this presentation, and have started reading all my digital comics the same way.

As far as how I read titles from other companies, I buy all my DC titles on Comixology because DC does not have a service similar to Marvel Unlimited. I am not as much of an indie guy, so I either wait for 99 cent sales on Comixology for indies, or I might decide to read more indies on subscription e-book services like Scribd. They now have Marvel, IDW, Boom!, Archie, etc., but no Image, DC or Dark Horse. However, I have to think this kind of "Netflix" subscription model is going to become more popular, so it might be just a matter of time before Image, DC and Dark Horse take part in something like that.

So there are some trade-offs, but for someone like me who has limited time (and money) to enjoy this hobby, I've discovered this works for me. And, to the extent I am able, I still support the publishers financially.

Addition:

Oh, and since there are no Star Wars titles on MU, I do buy those when they come out, so Marvel is getting some of my day-and-date money. :) I should point out that my MU reading "habit" is not absolute, by any means. A few times, after reading until the end of what MU has on a particular title, I have gone to Comixology and purchased the latest issues because I was really enjoying the title and wanted to catch up! Marvel knows this. Marvel also knows they are keeping people like me, who might otherwise leave their books altogether, in their universe by offering a second tier of product at a lower price, which can also feed their funnel into current release sales.
