We discussed the May 2006 sales estimates for only about 25 minutes or so this time around.

Below are the rough notes I put together in preparation for the podcast. I've added linked to the charts for the titles mentioned. I use these notes as a guide for the podcast be we never cover all of the titles I have in the notes and we frequently discuss many other things that I don't have in my notes.



2006-05 IndexPointValue:

  • CBG = ~772.29
    • Up about ~43.39 from 2006-04 (~728.90)
  • ICv2 = ~772.57
    • Up about ~43.68 from 2006-04 (~728.89)


General Comments

  • On the one hand, it was an amazing month:
    • Top Comics
      • This was the 5th most dollars spent on the Top Comics since 1996-09
      • This was the most units sold for the Top Comics since 1997
    • Top Trades
      • This was the 5th most units sold for the Top Trades since 1996-09
      • 15th most dollars spent on the Top Trades since 1996-09
  • On the other hand, a lot of titles went down in sales:
    • About 144 of the top 300 comics sold less than the previous issue for the title
    • About 16 sold about the same as the previous issue
    • About 49 sold more than the previous issue
    • No previous issue was found for 91 of the top comics

MARKET SHARES

  • DC
    • Comic book units: 45.32% (3,434,600)
    • Comic book dollars: 43.95% ($10,348,469.00)
  • Marvel
    • Comic book units: 42.30% (3,205,800)
    • Comic book dollars: 42.56% ($10,021,283.00)

    • Comic book units: 2.75% (208,500)
    • Comic book dollars: 2.69% ($634,812.00)

      • All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder #1 (~261,100) @ $2.99 in 2005-07
        • Only a difference of ~400 copies
    • Only five others have sold better in the last decade (starting with 1996-09):
      • Darkness #11 (~357,000) @ $2.50 in 1997-12
      • Fantastic Four (v2) #1 (~314,000) @ $2.95 in 1996-09
